About PRIS

Peace Research in Sweden (PRIS)

The origins of the association Peace Research in Sweden (PRIS) can be traced back to 8–9 June 2004, when a meeting of Swedish peace researchers was arranged in Umeå. The meeting was organized by the Department of Political Science, Umeå University & the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA), and gathered 30 representatives from ten research institutions around Sweden. Each institution presented an overview of its education and research profiles, and possibilities for future cooperation were debated.

Two years later, in September 2006, the School of Global Studies at the University of Gothenburg arranged “the second Swedish peace research conference,” this time with paper presentations. This was followed by biennial conferences in October 2008 in Lund, December 2010 in Uppsala, June 2012 in Göteborg, February 2014 in Umeå, and April 2016 in Malmö. These conferences were all funded by the Folke Bernadotte Academy.

In Umeå 2014 the suggestion was made to formalize the network around the biennial conferences into an association for peace researchers in Sweden. A working group prepared a concrete proposal for an association, which was inaugurated on the 15th of April 2016, during a conference in Malmö.
